Book Review and Giveaway: Far World Water Keep by J. Scott Savage

13 year old Marcus is not having a great day. First bullies try to beat him up and then he finds out that an evil otherworldly power wants him dead. Before the evil’s emissary can strike him dead, Marcus is pulled from Earth to another world, a magical world called Far World, by Kyja, a girl his age. He discovers that Far World is in danger, and it’s up to him and Kyja to save it which they can only do by getting the four elementals to work together. And so they set off on a quest fraught with danger and with the evil power and its minions nipping at their heels.

This is the first book in a series, so it details only the beginning of the quest: to find Water Keep, where the water elementals live. Marcus and Kyja face a variety of obstacles, some which feel slightly derivative (the Unmakers remind me of The Neverending Story’s The Nothing, the talking forest trees are similar to the Ents in Lord of the Rings), but the pacing is great and the story speeds along nicely.

Both Marcus and Kyja are appealing main characters though Kyja is just a tad too noble to be completely believable. Marcus’s character is the best thing about the book, and what elevates it from your run of the mill quest story to something more special. Marcus is disabled and confined to a wheelchair or forced to crawl. He has his moments of self-pity and self-doubt, but he’s able to overcome these to find the hero within. Disabled kids have a strong role model in Marcus and the rest of us gain a deeper understanding of the disabled experience.

Far World: Water Keep will be in stores on September 12th.

If you would like a signed copy of Far World, just let me know by this Saturday September 6th in the comments. The most impassioned plea gets the book.

I love The Neverending Story and I'm sure I would enjoy this book because I have just heard so many wonderful things about it from all of the blogs I visit!

I don't think I'm too good at impassioned pleas. Regardless, I would LOVE to win this book. I've heard about it on nearly every blog and I've entered every single contest I've seen, but I have yet to win a copy! I love YA fantasy and I've been reading the author's blog pretty much since I started my own.

So, please consider me? =)

Impassioned pleas...that's a creative way to judge a contest. :) I like it.

How about...I know this 13 year old boy who LOVES the Percy Jackson series. In fact, it's the only thing that he will read. This seems like a great book with similar themes. Pick me so that I can encourage this 13 year old to keep reading! (seriously, I do know a 13 year old who would enjoy this book and who doesn't read very much) :-)

OH MY GOD!!!! I WANT THIS BOOK SO BADLY!!! I've entered like 10 contests to win it and I never won. In fact, I've been entering contests. Wins = 0. :'( I've been hearing about this for months and it's exactly the kind of book I love to read! I want to win this contest!

I wish to read it so much. I have contacted the author, say three times, for a copy. And have not sueeded in getting it. And despite entering in numerous giveaways, I have not won it. Problem is, I live outside of US and not many are open for those. Still I enter, being ever the optimist!

I know it is not going to be released in India any time soon and I am kind of desperate to read it.

PLEASE COUNT ME IN!

Definitely enter me. Like many have said, I'v entered a ton of contests for this..read many reviews and interviews...and have yet to win the book. I would love to win it at some point (maybe this oneee?) because I'm sure it will just take me an even longer time to read this book if I don't win it, because i have so many books I still need to read, i should start cutting back on books i buy and whatnot. LOL

I think marcus sounds like an amazing character. I love that he's disabled and shows a different side to the hero. not all heros come in capes and tights and wear masks...I think we can all be heroes in our own way and it's nice to see an author focus on someone like that.

I'm a huge fan of the harry potter series and now that those are over, who knows? this might become a series that i start to love just as much...or maybe just remind me of how i felt when i read harry potter. I don't know..i know you can't compare it to harry potter like a lot of people do with twilight, but i'm not usually sold on a ton of fantasy novels...and this one does sound super good, so i'd love to be able to read it.

i don't know how impassioned this was, but i suppose it is a very long tirade of how much i hope to win this book. LOL i'm addicted to contests as well, what can i say?

alright, i better leave you alone now. :) i'm sure whoever wins will really love it!

The book cover is so amazing and tell so much about the main story of the book. Such a pure fantasy from my favorite type aka the elementes and also a humain going agniest his well for the greater good.

If I was ever going to review that book I will give it 9 out of 10 for just it's looks and the summry; but my review might change into 10 if I got deeper and read it.

Please count me into the contest.

This would be so cool, to read with my daughter. She is at an age, where it is difficult to find reading material that intrigues her. She is very much fantasy oriented, loves World of Warcraft (full of legend/lore/ and elementals!). It would be a great series to start her on, and perhaps get her reading more.
