Waiting On Wednesday (31) Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

I've been seeing this one around for a few weeks, and I have to say I love the cover and the fairy tale quality of the story.

Then I got an e-mail from Elise at Reading Rocks alerting me to the fact that someone has put an ARC of the book, due in hardcover on August 1st, up on ebay (read the whole story on Maggie's blog).

I am completely against selling ARCs (though should I make an exception for NYC's The Strand bookstore since I hear publishers themselves actually dump ARCs there?) and though it can be hard to figure out what to do with ARCs you don't need anymore, I try to either pass mine on to other reviewers, give them to friends, or donate them to charity. I know some say you should destroy them, but I am incapable of hurting a book!

In any case, here is the summary of Shiver:

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf--her wolf--is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

You can pre-order SHIVER from Amazon by clicking here. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can pick up a copy of this at BEA. Maggie is signing at the Scholastic booth on Saturday from 3:30-4:30 pm so hopefully I can fit that in!

As always, Waiting On Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

  1. Yeah I guess if that is true maybe the publishers rather get them into the hands of readers instead of the bottom of a recycling bin? Yeah I don't think there is any possible way I can't go to the Strand when in New York...

  3. I'm opposed to selling or destroying ARCs too! I hope to go to The Strand too. Maybe I can find a copy of Shiver there!

  5. Looks awesome. But if I could go to BEA, I would be doing everything in my existence to get my hands on an ARC of Catching Fire. Sigh. September is way too far away.

Have fun at the Strand! That was the ONE place I didn't get to see while I was there.

  6. I've seen this one a few times on blogs and stuff, and while I liked the cover, I never really bothered reading the blurb. Well, I have just now and WOW, I really want to read this one now! XD

  9. Man, I loved the cover before I even knew it had a fairy tale thing going on. I will be so all over this.

Does it say something really bad about me that my first thought on the ARC selling was "I wonder if the publisher did that, then tried to make a scandal about it, as a publicity ruse"? What's wrong with me?

That said, while I personally would never sell an ARC because I respect the editing process (I've edited a book that we now have ARCs of, and the actual book is going to be so much better than the ARC, so I'm really sensitive to this now!), I do feel a bit like... how many books have such a big fan base before coming out that people will pay a bunch of money for the ARC? If you're in this category, you probably have bigger things to worry about. Or, what am I missing?

  21. It's funny, because ARCs were made to be thrown away, and yet us readers cannot even fathom that horrifying nightmare. Love it. :)

  22. I blogged about this awhile back and I agree with you, it looks like a wonderful read. I can't wait to read it.

  24. Hmmm... This looks like an interesting read.

  25. haha Steph Su the idea of throwing away any book is horrifying to me ARC or not!

Anyway I don't know where the Strand gets their ARCs but they've had them forever. I used to shop them when I was a little kid. They don't make much of a profit on them.

  28. I've seen a lot of ARC's up for auction on eBay. It's crazy. I guess some people consider them collectible? True first editions or something like that?

Shiver sounds excellent. I hope you're able to get a copy of it at BEA!

  29. Elizabeth - It would be a great publicity ruse!

Ruth - I've heard that too. Imagine how much an ARC of Harry Potter must be worth!

  30. Just read Shiver. Could not put it down. It's wonderful. Will review very soon.
Oh, and I keep all my arcs too - can't imagine destroying them

  31. Oh, this sounds like a book for me. I have written down the title, August seems such a long wait(but I have plenty of books to read in the meantime). I think I have to preorder a copy at Amazon, I live in Norway and I bet the book won't come out here in August.

  33. Thanks for letting me know :) I think there is a problem with my template. I have experienced another problem with it as well.

  34. This one looks like something I would love to read. If you do manage to get a copy, I will be interested in reading your review!

  35. I work at a bookstore and got the proof of this. :D It's really amazing. I've never read a story quite like it. Sam is like the boy I fantasized about as a teenager suddenly embodied. It had me in tears by the end. Q_Q Highly recommended!

I'm definitely buying this in hardcover for my personal library.
