Book Review: How to Buy a Love of Reading by Tanya Egan Gibson

Carly has "never met a book she liked" so her well-to-do parents decide to hire an author to write a novel just for her - one she'll have to love. Hilarity ensues.

This is an ambitious, smart novel which I highly enjoyed. Not only does it have a very original structure - sections are divided by literary device - but it also presents main characters that are worth spending time with. I loved the relationship between Carly and her crush/best friend - golden boy alcoholic and avid reader Hunter. But the relationships between supporting characters, such as Carly's author, Bree, and her college chum and literary idol Justin (who happens to live in Carly's community) are just as compelling.

This is one of those that you could definitely read a second time and pick up on a lot that you might have missed the first time around. I thought some of the novels within the novel sounded brilliant and I wouldn't mind reading them too!

One of my favorite quotes:

"Not until she'd met Hunter had she even given any thought to what kind of person she wanted to be. Before Hunter it had never even occurred to her that you could choose." (p 199)

HOW TO BUY A LOVE OF READING is available in hardcover now. Find out more about it at the author's website.

I have had this book on my TBR pile for a couple of months. I'm definitely planning on reading it soon! Glad to hear you really enjoyed it. How cool would it be to have someone write a book specifically for you?

See this sounds quirky and cool but I've been burned by books that seem like they should appeal to bookworms before (The Book Lover). But I'm going to listen to you and put it on my list just because you've made it sound so cute.

I've seen this book around quite a bit, but somehow your short little description of it has made me want to read it more than anything else.

I read this book very early this year, and I didn't like it that much. I though there were really humorous parts, and Carly has a lot of heart. But pretty much every other character (except Bree, perhaps) was so shallow and irresponsible and horrible. I really hated Hunter- I found him to be really selfish. I think Gibson writes well, though- I would be interested in another book by her.

You had me at "This is one of those that you could definitely read a second time and pick up on a lot that you might have missed the first time around." I've thought about reading this one several times but your review has made the final decision to jump in and get it from my library!

I liked this novel as well. It is very well written.

It sounds a bit of a LITERARY CONCEPT, so I'm surprised to hear it actually works as a story. I love the quote. It's very similar to a part in Summers at Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn.

I bought this from Amazon a couple weeks ago. I started reading it, but I haven't made it very far - either the sentence structure is quite more complicated than what I'm used to, or my English reading abilities aren't up to par! Which means... it'll take me longer than expected to finish it. But I'm loving it all the same. Confusing sentences all the same.

I have seen both positive and negative reviews of this book. I will have to see if the library has it if I decide to read it.

I need to try this one again. It just gives me that "Great Gatsby" vibe. I do not like Fitzgerald's style.
