BEA Saturday Highlights + 3 Book Prize Pack

My Thursday/Friday BEA highlights.

And let's just say, I know the three blocks on 34th St. between 8th Ave. and 11th Ave. very well. Here's a bird's eye view (taken from the Empire State Building on Tuesday).

On Saturday at BEA, my main focus was the author signings. In the morning, I went to some picture book signings with my friend Heather. In the afternoon, I ran around trying to hit a bunch of signings with Alea and Gail that were all at the same time. We were successful for the most part! I had such a blast getting to chat with authors, publicists and bloggers that I've been in touch with over the past year. The books are just icing on the cake (and nice souveniers). Here is my stack of signed books from Thursday/Friday/Saturday (not including the picture books or Geektastic).

Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins
Liar - Justine Larbalestier
Once Was Lost - Sarah Zarr
Candor - Pam Bachorz
Shiver - Maggie Stiefvater
Prophesy of the Sisters - Michelle Zink
Going Bovine - Libba Bray
Sea Change - Aimee Friedman
One Wish - Leigh Brescia
Also Known As Harper - Ann Haywood Leal
The Plague - Joanne Dahme
Lips Touch - Laini Taylor and Jim Di Bartolo
Leviathan - Scott Westerfeld
The Unnamed - Joshua Ferris
Little Bird of Heaven - Joyce Carol Oates

Saturday evening was Little Brown's Geektastic party. Amy (My Friend Amy) and I had lots of fun bowling badly! I was also stalked by David Levithan (and have top secret pictorial proof). Thanks to the team at Little Brown for organizing such a fun event.

*************************************************

And now, something special for readers of my blog. While I was at BEA, I got three packages shipped to me. Liar, Shiver and Catching Fire. Since I already have signed copies of these three titles, I want to pass them on to one lucky blog reader. This contest is open internationally, and will run until June 17th at 11:59 PM.

For one entry, tell me either a great lie you told, something that makes you shiver, or to what lengths you would be willing to go to catch Catching Fire.

For a second entry, post a link to this contest on your blog or social network site, and tell me you did so in a separate comment.

Good luck!

O.M.G!!!! I'm dying to read CATCHING FIRE!!! And I'm super excited for SHIVER as well.
What I'd do to get a copy of CATCHING FIRE?
I'd do pretty much anything, except for buying an ARC, because I'd feel way too bad about it.

In my nightmare, my 17-year-old-son was trapped inside a helicopter. A fire was coming but the helicopter wouldn’t work and his seatbelt wouldn’t unfasten. The fire came closer and closer and he told his buddies to leave him and save themselves. They were all wearing uniforms of some sort, like they were in the army. The next day, I decided not to tell him about the dream, but I did tell him never to join the army. He laughed and said he had no plans to join the army, but he was thinking about becoming a smoke jumper (first time he’d ever mentioned it). Shivers!

What makes me shiver? Zombies. That is literally the only thing that scares me anymore. And I mean really scared, not the "I'm uncomfortable because you're showing me gore" scared, because that's not being scared, that's just not being comfortable with what is on the screen. Scared is actually freaking out after seeing a zombie movie while walking through a dark forest...*shiver*

For Catching fire I would learn to breath fire while walking on hot coals(two things that would actually be interesting to learn)but may cause severe burns to me. I adored Hunger Games

As for a lie it isn't great more extensive- I have circle of 2cm diameter on my upper arm that sort of looks like a burn (actually were veins joined together). When I was 11 I told a friend with help from two other friends that I was born with a third arm and it was amputated after I was born, also said that it was displayed at the hospital and after a week my Dad (who found this all very funny) even volunteered to alter baby clothes as if my parents were prepared encase the surgery hadn't worked. It lasted for 3 months until we couldn't add anymore than we came clean.

Amazing contest!

Something that makes me shiver (not in a good way) would be clowns. I don't like clowns - they totally creep me out. Not sure why but they do.

I would be willing to sing in public to catch Catching Fire. I don't like being the center of attention and singing in public would terrify me.

A great lie - can't think of one. I try very hard not to lie. :)

Whatever you want me to tell you in order for you to send me this book... I will say it.

OOO I soo badly wish I won this! I'm an avid reader but you don't get good YA books here:(
I'll just answer all three questions because I feel like it:D
A great lie I've told? Ehh...I didn't want my frends to know who I had a crush on, so I made up a whole fantasy guy along the course for make-believe. Uhh, yeah. Not proud of it. I wish fantasy-guy existed though *sigh*
The thought of being completely alone in this world makes me shiver. And the though of spiders. I wouldn't say spiders themselves because that makes me scream and run, not shiver.
Lengths I'd go to to snag a copy of Catching Fire:
1.) Break into Suzanne Collins' house (YAY!:P)
2.) Give up pizza (THE HORROR!)
3.) Act like a pretentious girly-girl who loves baby pink and makeup(EECK. I repeat, EECK.)
4.) Not talk for a year (omg. that's gotta be hard. but anything for that book...that piece of heaven).
SO that's it. Second comment coming innn!!

Those three have been on my wishlist for awhile. Well, I'm not much of a liar but I do have a great shiver! We recently moved into a new house but I wasn't aware of the fact that during this time of the year it's mating season for a particular animal: the fiddler crab. Well, I adore crab legs but I've never really seen a crab in real life... until now. Those things are SO creepy! They look like mini-turantulas to me. They're about the size of a half dollar or a little bit bigger and they keep getting in the house. My cat has gotten particularly good at killing them but I still can't help but screech and move to the other side of the room as quickly as possible when I see them. Of course, hubby finds this hilarious *shudder*.

I have a lot of great lies!

1. I told my psycho Jonas brother fan of a friend that the Jonas brothers died in a plane crash that morning and she believed me ( until she got home and looked it up of course!)

2. I went to camp with my best friend that looks a lot like me and we lied to the whole camp saying that we were twins ( they all still think we are and we've been back 2 more times)

3. I told one of my friends that is a big Taylor Lautner fan ( Played Jacob Black in Twilight) that he was my distant cousin and to back my lie up I put a contact with his name in my phone which was really actually my number...

Wow I sound so mean.....

A great lie, something that makes me shiver, or what lengths I'd go to, to get Catching Fire. That's a toughie to choose from.

A lie: Let's see...Whenever I'd wake up with my little sister in my bedroom (a while ago; it was something she enjoyed to do at the time) reading or doing this puzzle I've got on my desk, I would pretend to be asleep and just yell random stuff. She still thinks that I talk in my sleep ;D (e.g. "Return the diamond at once!" or something >.<)

Nothing much sends shivers down my spine - just the thought of a Hunger Games movie. Or getting Catching Fire early. The excitement of that. Other things that send shivers down my spine are those annoying orange lady bugs XD. I almost dropped my laptop, once, because it was on it.

The lengths I would go to, to get Catching Fire. For one thing, if I knew somebody irl with it, I'd probably stalk them, no kidding. Knock on their door, demand for them to at least lend it to me for a day so I could read it (then, of course, I'd "misplace" it so I could keep it till I got my own copy). Or, online, I'd bid a lot of money, were my mother to let me (darn the fact that it's her ebay account and not mine!). Do bloggers’ contests like I am now, enter contests like that essay one on Scholastic. Really, I would do anything to get my hands on an advanced copy of Catching Fire: steal, lie, stalk. Track down Suzanne Collins, give her fifty dollars (or more :p) for it.

My email: AKMaliens@aol.com with the slim chance that I may win an ARC. If that email does not work, send to sombritta@yahoo.com (two t's). Now to hope with all my heart that I win; I want Catching Fire more than anything right now (I read The Hunger Games as soon as it came out; I'd read Collins' first series already, and I was excited for her newest works).

Best lie? Well, my friend and I "hypnotized" my brother and blindfolded him before we moved around talking to him in funny accents. We had him convinced that when we hypnotized him he had been sent to an alternate reality.

Okay, I have a great *acting* a lie story (I'm not very good at lying in general so I hope this counts):

I was backstage at a Def Leppard concert (and just for reference, my most prized possession is my banged-up Def Leppard Hysteria keychain my brother gave me 19 years ago) and I had my ridiculous little manual camera and I was off to the side but there was this eight-foot stretch of empty space between the stage and the fenced-off crowd for media photogs only and I just waltzed in there all 'what? I belong here' and started shooting and one of the security guys knew I wasn't supposed to be there but he was too afraid to come tell me to leave because I was very much unapproachable, I-don't-have-time-for-your-crap in my general attitude and I TOOK PICTURES OF JOE ELLIOTT SINGING.

Lovely contest, by the way. Very generous.

I fI want to read Catching Fire, I'll have to find something about me that isn't dull to you. I guess when I was in 7th Grade, I had an awful math teacher. She was very strict and would bite your ear off if you forgot your homework. One day, I realized that I had left my homework at home, and I made myself throw up.

I guess that's not really a lie, but it wasn't telling the teacher I forgot my hoework either. Ah, my life is still so dull, I can't even think of anything better. :)

Mice make me shiver. I cannot stand the thought of one in my home after one of them ran across my pillow while I was on it. This past winter, I found two rats in my garage. I want to get rid of the mice, not for them to get bigger.

Thank you,

I would do anything to catch a copy of Catching Fire. I'm sorry. It's true. I am a book junkie. If I have to swim to Alaska in my underwear I would be happy to. You can even stick me in one of those reality tv shows that pour bugs over you. In fact, I would even write on a blog for the first time(usually i'm just the creeper that reads the blogs and laughs at other people's entries).

Hi A great lie I told. MMMmmm. Well I remember a April fool's day fairly long ago, where I took it upon myself to play a couple of jokes on some coworkers. One of the jokes was replacing a fellow's desk plant with a dead one in the same pot. I was surprised at how annoyed he was. Of course I was asked if I did the deed and I denied it. But 10 days later the actual missing plant did show up on his desk repotted.

Sounds like some fun books. Well my number one thing that makes me shiver is spiders especially walking through their webs out in the garden but my first thought was actually my niece when she screams LOL.

Wow. Way to make me salivate.

I once convinced my little sister that my best friend went overseas to get her tonsils out, only her boat shipwrecked on the coast of Ireland and her tonsils spontaneously changed into gills so she could breathe. Only when she swam to shore, she went ahead and got her tonsils out, and then on the way back the boat wrecked AGAIN, only off of Maine this time. Since she didn't have her Aquatonsils anymore, she just had to flail around in the freezing water until a lobster boat picked her up. She ended up losing her nose to frostbite. The moral of the story is, what happens in Ireland stays in Ireland.

My sister fell for it.

I have no idea why or how.

Wow, this is really generous of you!

Lol, something that makes me shiver (literally) is getting up in the morning when it's been snowing and the heat pump isn't on! (I live in a house that's up on this little hill- I feel bad when couriers have to deliver things to us!)

Ooh, something else that makes me shiver are scary movies- like Silence of the Lambs, the Ring, Carrie, etc. ;)

Thanks so much for the awesome giveaway! =)

Since I'm not much of a liar, or know of anything that makes me shiver, the last is my only option. If I could get a copy of Catching Fire, I would stay a virgin for at least the next 4 years. Not that big a deal, but I really want to read that book.

Anyway, ferrets are something that makes me shiver. In a bad way, of course. I'm not even sure it could be called a shiver... more like a shudder/cringe/freakout.

hmmmm...what makes me shiver..well here goes. I had this one friend in jr high, she was really in to the occult. I mean, she was REALLY into it. The entire school was afraid of her, and I was dared by my typical suburban christian friends to sit at the table claimed by her for a week. Turns out, she wasn't all that creepy, at least that is what i thought. So we became buddies, to my other chums disgust. She invited me over to her humble abode one fine Sunday afternoon for a sleepover. She told me to bring a candle, innocent enough, so I thought. It was around midnight, and this girl brought out a Ouija board, she then proceeded to "access the supernatural" to ask how long we would be friends. Apparently, these "beings" told us we would be chums for about 5 more minutes. The candles went out, and her big brother screamed bloody murder and jumped on me. That freaked me out so much. Indeed, we were only friends for about 5 more minutes. To this day, the glimpse of a Ouija board makes me shiver.

The best lie? See above :)

What I would do to read Catching Fire? Eat mashed potatoes (I hate most all potatoes), mix foods (food should be left separate), listen to Bobby Dupea (my sister is obsessed). Or Maybe I would hire a certain boy wizard to help me get the book. Hmm. That sounds more like it.

Also, I get the shivers the most late at night. It is then that my imagination runs away from me. I swear the shadows turn into creatures and are just waiting to grab me. And every noise seems like a creatures voice just waiting...

"Astrid," coach said, spitting on the ground, "I want you in left field. Karl's hurt himself and we need a body out there."

I stared dumbly at him. What in God's name had possessed him to make a decision like that? I was the second worst player on the team, except for Wally, who was three years younger than us and a professional clown to boot (Pratfaller, grade 3, fyi).

I have to admit, I was rather nervous when I walked out onto the field. Cory Higgins's mom up in the bleachers started to boo, and I couldn't blame her. Things must be dire if Coach was sending me out to play.

I only joined because of my brother James really. Mom said because James was as dumb as rocks he needed his sister to watch after him. Sadly, this is true. Once when I wasn't watching he duct taped himself to the cat. So I really needed to keep an eye on things.

I stood out in left field and watched James at his position as shortstop. He was stupid but he was an amazing player. No one could play like him, which made it more embarrassing when I had to. It wasn't too bad though. Mostly I just stood around. If I had to catch anything I just ran where Mrs. Higgins told me to. I'm pretty sure her voice was what inspired bullhorns. Well, that and the fact that she kind of has the face of one.

Anyway, so I was standing out there, minding my own business, when I hear the incredible sound of a CRACK! -ing noise that usually sends shivers down my spine because that means someone's hitting the ball out into my field.

"ASTRID!" blared Mrs. Higgins. "RUN RIGHT! RUN RIGHT!"

Blindly I obeyed, or thought I did, and looked up, still running, to see the object sailing out of the sky towards me. Well, actually, there were two. Because Mrs. Higgins had lost her patience with me when I ran left and instead had hurled a copy of a book she'd just bought, and I could see even from five hundred feet away that it was Catching Fire, which I'd been DYING to read. I ran towards that instead, glove outreached to catch it.

But I had forgotten about the zombie moles. You see, our town has had quite the infestation recently and while the mayor has tried measures like anti-viral medications and good old-fashioned shootouts, it hasn't really done much to get rid of the infestation. They did manage to contain it in the woods not too far from the field, but I guess that was just too much. I stepped right into a nest of them.

Have you ever felt zombie moles crawling up your legs? Imagine desiccated claws digging into your flesh. I'd found something even scarier than baseball hitting bat. But damned if I was going to let that book out of my grasp!

I lept and caught it at the VERY TIP of my glove, and smashed down onto the turf. I bruised a rib and ended up having to spend six months in an undisclosed location to fight zombie-itis, but I had a copy and I had fought moles and gravity to catch it.

Okay, so that was a lie. But if it were real those WOULD be the lengths I'd go to. ;)

What would I do for Catching Fire? Let's just say a lot. Specifically, I would camp out doors just to be the first in line so I could make sure I would get it- and I very much dislike camping. Not to mention the hours I've spent online searching for an opportunity to get it, and any more time I have to spend searching it out if I have the opportunity to get it. I'd do a lot.

May the odds be ever in your favor.
