Cover Interview and Mega Prize Pack Giveaway: The Stolen One by Suzanne Crowley

The cover of Suzanne Crowley's THE STOLEN ONE really reached out and drew me in. The rich colors, especially the red hair were what I first noticed, and then I spent a good while just looking and marveling at all the details. Take a look:

Here's what Suzanne has to say about the cover:

The Stolen One's cover, in my humble opinion, is incredibly beautiful and haunting. It captures the mood of the novel perfectly. The cover girl, the dress, the pose, her expression, even how she is tenderly holding the pear, are a perfect match to the story.

My editor sent me photos of every stage of the production of the cover, from the search for a model to the dress. And I actually found the necklace on the cover on a site called "Sapphire and Sage." I contacted my editor who ordered one from the artist and it arrived the night before the photo shoot. Later, my editor gave me the necklace, and I actually wore it to my first event on Saturday at a local library where I did a presentation.

I got to see takes from the photo shoot which was totally cool! And eventually, when I saw the final cover, I was more than thrilled. I'm still excited when I see it. It's like an old master painting, and a Vogue photo shoot in one - the richness, the color saturation, are so incredible, yet I think it also has a modern, approachable feel. Magnificant!

And then, I was privileged enough to get to ask the photographer, Chris Borgman, a few questions (thanks to Alea for helping me brainstorm):

Did you have the chance to talk with the author or read The Stolen One in preparation for the shoot?
I personally did not get a chance to talk to Suzanne during production of the cover, but I did read a pre-release copy of the book. That helped me to visualize what the model should look like and what her surroundings might look like.

Did you have a certain amount of artistic license or were the instructions from the publisher pretty strict?
When I met with Paul, the Art Director, he had a basic sketch of the cover. It was for the model's pose and angle of view. Our discussion was mostly about what she should be wearing which would represent apoint in time within the story. I got with my stylist, who has a lot of experience in theater, and she sketched out clothing options. I then sent these to Paul. Once a decision was made I sent the sketches to a costume rental house in Long Island. We selected the dress and it was FedExed to us. These dresses are exact replicas and were used on Broadway or in museum exhibitions. We were lucky to find such a wonderful dress, it was the only place in the New England that had this kind of authentic quality.

I did a small casting of models. Since the model had to fit an exact look, it was very difficult to find our girl. Many models look too model like. We wanted a beautiful young girl that looked like a real person, of course she also had to have the red hair. We photographed her in the studio on a green background. The studio background was removed and an ivy covered wall was added. I photographed the wall at The Cloisters. I went there thinking it would provide some interesting textures and was not disappointed.

What are some alternate poses you tried out or would have given the chance?
Originally I was thinking more of royal garden in the background. After discussing it with Paul, we thought the wall was better because it was more closed in and better represented her eventual feelings while working for the queen. The open garden would look too open and free. I did play around with a few different backgrounds but liked the ivy the most cause it was simple enough to allow the type over it but still looked like a castle wall.

Another option would have been that's she inside the castle, maybe in a small room. I imaged castle walls as pretty boring in color, and we all really liked the her red hair against the green ivy. Her hair and the ivy seem to flow in a similar pattern.

Thanks Suzanne and Chris!

Fun fact - Chris also shot the cover for Cindy Pon's SILVER PHOENIX and she interviewed him about it on her site.

You can also read this interview at Shooting Stars Mag where Suzanne talks some more about the cover (and the meaning of that pear).

I love the cover of Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace - the library's copy has a small picture of the top of a woman's face, behind bars. I love it because the story's about a Victorian woman accused of murder, but of course being a woman in Victorian times is a cage in itself.

Please enter me, and many thanks to the author and you for offering this giveaway!

Some cover art that I've thought was beautiful recently was Steamed by Katie MacCalister and Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs. Both are very different, but very cool/pretty.

Steamed is very edgy, and the styling is hip because it's Steam Punk. Then Silver Borne is soft and edgy at the same time, because Mercy will always look so tough. :)

That's an amazing cover! I've really been wanting to read The Stolen One :D Thanks for the contest!

My favorite cover from a book I've read recently would have to be on Maggie Stiefvater's SHIVER. The colors and the art really evoke the feelings of the cold winter in the story, and the woods design is so mysterious I didn't even notice the wolf on it for a while. Plus, the dot of red on the title and the red excerpt on the back totally works with the blue and the white and makes it a little brighter. LOVED it!

You always have such interesting interviews. I don't think I've ever read an interview with a cover artist before. It was great to get some insight into how he approached the project.

And what a great contest! I think the last cover that really sucked me in was the paperback of THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY by Michael Chabon. I love how the entire cover, from the front to the spine to the hook on the back, is formatted like a stack of Golden Age comics. It caught my eye, and it fit the story to a tee.

Thanks for the chance! :)

I liked the cover of Daughter of the Flames by Zoe Marriott... that one was amazing. The fires and the girl holding a sword emerging from the fires... awesome.

I love that you did a post about the cover (and were able to interview the person behind it). I know that we aren't supposed to "judge a book by its cover", but I don't think we can help the initial reactions we have to a particular cover image.

The cover art for Kathryn Stockett's 'The Help' really appeals to me - it's spare, with its golden backdrop and three birds, but the title is blocked off in this lovely purple shape that just makes it pop off the cover.

Looks amazing! And the premise sounds very interesting. Thank you! (:

And the most eye-catching cover I've seen recently would have to be Hush Hush. I love the color scheme and the feathers with the tinge of read look gorgeous to me.

I have liked Nora Roberts' first 2 book covers of her Bride Quartet series. They are lovely and romantic.

I also liked the fun, flirty covers of Kleypas' Smooth Talking Stranger and Anderson's Bending the Rules.

The cover art for "The Forest of Hands and Teeth" really drew me in. The picture was gorgeous, and the expression in the girl's eyes really captured the overall tone of the book.

I recently picked up a copy of Naomi Novick's Her Magesty's Dragon at the used book store based on the cover art.
It was a very good read and I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.

What a wonderful cover! it looks great. The cover that has stood out to me most lately has to be either "hush, hush" - so dark and pretty or the "hunger games" series - I really like streamlined, graphic art looking art and these really just catch my eye.

Thanks!

A cover that has grabbed recently is one I came across today: Ash by Malinda Lo. It's so simple yet beautiful and haunting. One of those covers that draws you in and sets the mood of the book before you even open the cover.

I love the cover of Cleopatra's Daughter because it creates a feeling of mystery as well as letting readers know they are entering into a story of another time period.

Without a doubt, my favorite cover lately has been been for Hush Hush. Ash is a close second.

It's funny because I don't read a lot of YA but love these covers enough that I got interested in the books.

The cover that snagged me most recently for *purchase* was for Lori Devoti's "Amazon Ink"--
The juxtaposition of the ancient sword with the neon just sent a zap through me--Amazing! And the protagonist's long, red hair was showcased in half-shadow, plus her leather outfit. Sweet!
The cover that snagged me for *checkout* in the library was for "On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness" by Andrew Peterson.
It's solid blue and "distressed" at the corners so it looks old.
There's gold script on the front for the title, and one little teeny inset of an image from the novel that's *just enough* to intrigue.

I love the cover to Airhead by Meg Cabot. It has captured my attention because on the front of the book is a supermodel but on the back is an average looking person.

That cover is GORGEOUS! And I'm a redhead, so I'd love makeup from the appropriate collection for me :)

The cover for The Luxe is my undoing. I bought the book entirely because of it, but really couldn't get into the story. Yet every time I see the cover, peeking out at me from my TBR pile, I try to read it again. The dress on it is so pretty that it makes me forget everything apart from the need to read the book it's on. It's driving me nuts!
